Savannah to Tybee: Savoring the Southern Coastal Gluten Free Bites

Savannah and Tybee Island

Savannah, Georgia, has a rich culinary scene that draws inspiration from traditional Southern cuisine, seafood, and global flavors. Many dishes include fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, and more southern delight. Seafood is also popular in Savannah thanks to its proximity to the coast.

I always enjoy finding the balance between Southern comfort food and international cuisine. However, many new restaurants with inspirations from different cultures are popping up along many popular shopping areas and side streets. Here are a few dining places I enjoyed during my 48-hour trip to the coastal city.

Restarants: Savannah and Tybee Island

Huey’s

Savannah River front

Huey’s is located on Savannah’s River Street and is the perfect melting pot between Southern cuisine and New Orleans flavors. Located on the historic riverfront, you will enjoy the nice breeze off the Savannah River while indulging in a delicious taste of New Orleans flair. The laid back atmosphere is perfect for morning brunch or afternoon lunch. They offer various gluten-free options and take great care of the food to ensure cross-contamination is not a concern. I loved the blackened catfish paired with parmesan cheese grits. The mimosa was the perfect drink for this slightly spicy and salty dish.

Le Cafe Gourmet

Smoked Salmon Crepe Savannah

During this trip to Savannah, I experienced a first for me. I tried a crepe for the first time, and I fell in love with this French dish. The smoked salmon crepe was so savory and full of flavor. I love smoked salmon, so it was a no-brainer on which crepe to order. The gluten-free crepe is made from buckwheat and can be filled with any ingredient on their crepe menu.

Le Cafe Gourmet

These options are perfect for your morning savory breakfast or late afternoon sweet snack. This cafe takes gluten allergies and celiac seriously. When you order, tell them if you have either, and they will take the extra time to clean the crepe machine, use separate utensils, and ensure there is no cross-contamination. Bonus: their macaroons are also gluten-free!

The Flying Monk Noodle Bar

The Flying Monk Savannah, Ga

The Flying Monk Noodle Bar is a vibrant and eclectic restaurant known for its diverse menu of Asian-inspired noodle dishes and lively atmosphere. You can dine inside, outside or take the food to go. The restaurant offers a creative fusion of Asian flavors and culinary traditions. Featuring a diverse selection of noodle dishes inspired by various Asian cuisines such as Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese, there is an options for everyone to enjoy.

Flying Monk Savannah

However, one of the highlights of dining at The Flying Monk Noodle Bar is the ability to customize dishes to suit individual tastes and dietary preferences. Guests can choose from various protein options, including chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu, and vegetables, ensuring something for everyone. Although the options are limited, you can customize your gluten-free meals and ensure they are as flavorful as you want.

Bernie’s Oyster House

Boiled Shrimp

Technically not in Savannah, Bernie’s Oyster House on Tybee Island takes pride in its fresh seafood selection, mostly oysters. Guests can indulge in a variety of oyster preparations, from freshly shucked raw oysters to savory chargrilled oysters topped with butter and Parmesan. In addition to oysters, the menu features an array of seafood classics such as shrimp, crab, clams, and fish, sourced locally whenever possible.

Oysters

While oysters are the star of the show at Bernie’s, the restaurant also offers a range of signature dishes showcasing the best Lowcountry cuisine. Likewise, Bernie’s Oyster House offers a casual and laid-back dining experience, perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends looking to enjoy a delicious meal in a relaxed setting. Guests can dine indoors or outdoors to soak up the island’s breezy atmosphere and scenic views. Hands down, Bernie’s serves the best boilded shrimp. I could eat multiple pounds every day and still crave them.

So far, Savannah has yet to disappointed with the many gluten-free options and the variety of restaurants to explore. It has become one of my favorite culinary cities, and I can’t wait to find more gluten-free gems to explore and share with all. Which culinary delight will you try first?
