Restaurant or Cafe (Savannah)

Food for the Family

One thing I love about Savannah is the abundance of local restaurants and cafes. Each place has a uniqueness and flair to fit all personalities. Whether you are on River Street, Broughton Street, or around one of the many squares exploring, you are sure to find a place that will satisfy any craving (or multiple if your family if like mine).

One place I found was Kayak Kafe. This restaurant was a great place to grab a quick bite before hitting the streets for shopping, playing at a park, or exploring new avenues. The staff was so friendly, answered all my questions, and brought the food out before the kids really acted like toddlers. Not only do they have gluten-free options, but they also have vegetarian and vegan dishes. Their menu had a wide variety, but I was excited to see the number of tacos on the menu (and it wasn’t even Tuesday). They also have options for the kiddos like mac and cheese (this is not only a food group at the house but everywhere we go). Kayak Kafe has two locations so that you can enjoy their food throughout your trip.

View of Savannah River from Rock On the Roof

After you have conquered the day with activities, shopping, and exploration, you and your family can enjoy watching the sunset at Rock On the Roof (atop the Bohemian Hotel). Rock on the Roof is a rooftop bar that offers tapas and drinks for all ages. While you watch the Savannah River change color at nightfall, you can share small plates with the family. The restaurant is a great place to jump-start your evening of dining or spending time with older kids before school starts back or family night out before college. It is a great place to unwind next to a fire pit while enjoying family and talking about the day.

Another excellent gathering place for lunch or dinner is Chive Seabar and Lounge. They have lovely seafood, and their oysters are amazing. I was excited to try their sashimi plate (order without the soy sauce or ask for gluten free) and steamed clams. They have great salads for a light lunch and a nice variety for everyone in your family, even those who want more than seafood. They were great at making recommendations and making sure our order was perfect! They are first come first serve, so make this place one of your first stops because they usually have a line of people waiting for there fantastic food.

Savannah is also full of great places to stop and grab a quick bite on the run. Some other places we found were wonderful coffee shops who offered gluten-free zucchini bread, house made gluten-free granola, and a variety of others options for a light breakfast or snack on the go. Blends Coffee Shop was usually our first stop in the morning before heading out for the day. They roast their coffee in house and have nice variety of food and, like most places in Savannah, they are pet friendly!

It’s so nice that eating establishments are starting to recognize and cater to the fact that people have a variety of dietary needs!
PS – that photo of Savannah River is to die for!

      Hi Angie!
Savannah is a wonderful place to visit! Its very lively, centered around the arts, great food, and very much an active city. If you get a chance to visit, you will fall in love! There are so many different coffee shops and another favorite of mine is Bitty and Beau’s.

      Hi Carol!
Which hotel did you stay at while you were there? I love how each square has its own vibe and restaurants to fit everyone’s taste.

I would love to visit Savannah someday, my understanding is, it is beautiful. I bet right now especially, since it is currently snowing in NH (again) and it’s COLD. I found your blog thru the Big Blogs 10K Challenge and hope you might visit my blog http://www.resilientruthie.com sometime. I too am gluten-free and I strive to get my husband to do it too! I’ll have recipes on my site eventually, and no doubt there will be gluten-free ones. 🙂

      Hi Ruthie!
Thank you for visiting! It can get cold in Savannah because of the river but I”m sure its nothing close to NH. Savannah is beautiful and has so much history. Thank you for sharing your link. I’ll be excited to see the different recipes you share!
