Tybee Island

Day trip to the Beach

Need a break from Savannah after walking all those miles and building new muscles from all the shopping bags? A visit to the beach and possibly see dolphins playing at the end of the jetties sounds like a great way to relax. Just a short 30-minute drive from Savannah is a small island called Tybee Island. This island is a great place to walk on the beach, search for seashells, and see more beautiful scenery this area has to offer.

Tybee Island offers an excellent daybreak trip or an overnight stay for those who love the beach just as much as a stay in a city. The kids will love searching for seashells along the beach or jumping the waves. If you are lucky enough, you might even see dolphins a few miles from the jetties looking for dinner. This beach is great destination to pack a cooler, chairs, and spend the day soaking up the sun or playing games with your family.

Another great feature (if the beach is not for you) is the lighthouse tour. Tybee has the oldest lighthouse in Georgia, which dates back to 1736. You can walk up the stairs to the top and look out over the water with 360 views. The lighthouse also has a museum you can visit or walk the grounds. After, you can visit Fort Pulaski, which is half way between Tybee Island and Savannah. This park offers trails, tours of the fort, and other activities for your family. These are wonderful places for the kids to explore and learn about history (but you don’t have to tell them the last part). For more information about lighthouse tours and times visit Tybee Island Light Station And Museum.
