Tips for Travel

Travel Basket

What Do You Bring for Entertainment?

When my son was younger, it was pretty easy to entertain him while we were on vacation. A book or two, his favorite ball, and a stuffed animal usually did the trick. Now that he is older and my daughter has come along, those simple fixes don’t always work. I’ve learned over the years to have activities, toys, books, or some form of entertainment ready for when they start to squirm on long car rides. For this reason, we have a travel basket in the back seat between the carseats to help make the trip go a little more smoothly.

What I love about the travel basket is the kids can help put it together before every trip. They can add their favorite toys, books, travel games, or whatever they think will keep them entertained. Since my kids love activity books, these tend to be hit on hit on long trips! My youngest like the flip the flap books so she can find who is hiding and my oldest likes books where be can trace letters and numbers with a dry erase marker. Those books fit perfectly the basket I place between them so they can reach for their books or item(s) of choice any time. Not only does this give them play options throughout the trip, it gives the parents a break from hearing “Are we there yet? I’m bored.” a 100 times. Plus, when you reach your destination, the basket makes a great way to carry those certain items into the hotel room, cabin, or wherever you are staying so the kids have something to play with on the days the weather is not the best. A bag, container with a lid, or backpack are great options, as well.

I usually only create one travel basket since my daughter is only 16 months old and doesn’t need a lot of toys in the car to keep her entertained. I always have staple items such as books, a stuffed animal or two, and my sons Crayola Color Wonder travel set. Crayola Color Wonder is perfect for travel and for at home. The markers, stamps, finger paints, and paintbrush pens only mark on Crayola Color Wonder paper. This means my kids cannot create new art projects on walls, furniture, use themselves as a canvas, or cause damage to the back seat of the car. Crayola Color Wonder has coloring books featuring popular movies, favorite characters from popular TV shows, books with blank pages so they can create their own masters pieces to take up every inch of your fridge, and best of all, has a travel case for all things color wonder artistic. It’s a win-win for everyone. What will you be packing in your travel basket for your next trip?
