Savannah

Broughton Street

Savannah is a small city full of old school charm, mystery, history, and delicious food everywhere you turn. This place has been a go-to destination for our family for many years. There are endless amounts of adventure from ghost tours, trolly ride around the city (which highlights the cities history), shopping on River Street, and many restaurants that offer an array of culinary selection.

One of my favorite places to visit and shop is on Broughton Street. If you love local boutiques, restaurants, and cafes, you will love what this street has to offer. This street also houses my favorite hotel, The Marshall House. This hotel has seen many modifications since it was built in 1851. Once a hospital during the Civil War, it is now an elegant hotel that displays its personal history throughout each floor. They offer different entertainment each night from local musicians to historians. Bonus, Monday through Thursday, they have cocktail hour with cheese and wine (wine is for the adults, of course).

Another favorite of mine is The Spice and Tea Exchange. This store is amazing for those who love to cook and drink tea. All spice mixes are made in store and you can request special mixes. This is one shopping experience where I send my husband and kids to get ice cream so I can find the seasonal spice mixes and discover new recipes. You can also order online! A few doors down is a great place for the kids to explore different types of popcorn. Savannah Rae’s gourmet popcorn has a wall and half full of tubs of different flavors of popcorn from cheesy flavors, to Oreo cookies, even cereal flavored. They even have certain containers market gluten free.

River Street

Savannah’s Candy Kitchen

River Street is one of the first streets in Savannah. You can follow the historic steps to the streets paved with cobblestone to have a day full of shopping and lunch. During certain times of the years, you can catch different events from local vendors showing off their merchandise or artist selling originals paints, even students from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) selling their work. An excellent stop for the kids is Savannah’s Candy Kitchen. They make taffy on site along with pralines, chocolate covered everything, and sell old school candy parents will enjoy from childhood. (Psst, they give out free samples of pralines also).

Once the kids have devoured enough candy to last for the year, you can visit one of the 22 squares in Savannah. These squares have their own unique stories and plenty of space for the kids to run around. They are a great place to take a stroll, see different monuments throughout the city, and see the southern charm which will keep you coming back. A great way to find each square and see which you would like to visit is to purchase a trolly ticket. The trolly runs through the city each day will pick your family up at any trolly spot during business hours. Just show your day ticket to hop on and off at all trolly stops throughout the city.

I love Savannah! Looking at the architecture and those gorgeous great oak trees is a reminder that I haven’t been in years. We will have to go again and check these places out.

I am dying to spend more time in Savannah. A few years ago we stopped for just an afternoon on our way to Florida and had a blast just wandering the streets.

Great timing for me to come across this post! I’m taking my soon to be 13 year old daughter to Savannah for her birthday in a few weeks and we’ve been trying to gather ideas of things to do. You have some great information here. Thank you

I like the idea of getting into a trolley hop on and off. The fountain of Forsyth park is beautiful.

Hi- We visited Savannah about a year and a half ago, actually, it was on Thanksgiving( we wanted something different) . We went at night and found a hotel/restaurant that served Turkey and all the fixings. Anyway, the next day it rained 🙁 but we did get to take the trolley tour, and the characters got dressed up- one of the I remember was Forest Gump! The bus stop in the movie was in one of the squares- we did some shopping on River St. – but I wished I had gone to the Marshall House- Maybe someday when we go back.

    Thanks!

I’m glad you were able to visit. Savannah has a lot to offer and its hard to explore everything in one visit. The history and story telling on the trolley tours are great. We haven’t visited during Thanksgiving but it sounds so fun!

I took many trips to Savannah when I lived in Beaufort, SC. We LOVED Paula Deens restaurant! My husband and I also loved their weekend long St. Patties Day celebration back in our younger years (ok….not at all family friendly). The trolly tour is also a great experience for tourists to learn about Savannah’s history. I have to say my favorite part of Savannah is the southern charm and mossy oaks!

It does transport you back in time a bit. We have not been down there for the St. Patties Day celebrations just yet (maybe when the kids are older) but we love being able to walk everywhere.
