The Fabulous Fox Theater
One of the best parts about visiting cities is learning the history and finding historical places to explore. But what if you can also be entertained by Broadway shows, movie nights, and comedy shows? The Fox Theater in Atlanta offers all this and more!
The Fox Theater started construction in the 1920s as a headquarters for Atlanta’s Shriners organization. However, when the cost of such an elaborate Far East theme became too much, the Shriners leased the auditorium to William Fox. At the time, William Fox was a big name in the entertainment industry, helping build theaters across the country. With Fox’s help, the Fox Theater was completed and opened its doors on Christmas day in 1929, featuring Disney’s “Steamboat Willy.” The history of the Fox Theater from opening day to the present day is a story for the books.
These days, the Fabulous Fox hosts some of Broadway’s number-one shows, Christmas specials, concerts, and so much more! My family’s tradition is to go to Celtic Women every year at the Fox. Our kids love the Saturday morning cartoons during the summer for the summer movie festival, and my husband and I enjoy the movies they play for adult date nights. I would recommend adding the Marque tickets during the film festival. These tickets allow you to enjoy appetizers and drinks on the rooftop an hour and a half before the film starts. You will also have a seat on the upper balcony for the best views. These are just a few of the perks offered.
Did you know the Fox Theater was almost shut down during the 1970s? “Save the Fox” became a massive movement during this time and is ultimately why we can enjoy many beautiful shows today. The Fox Theater also offers tours of the building, which explains the theater’s rocky history. This theater is a staple in the city of Atlanta. The Fox Theater hosts special events, such as birthdays and weddings, and it’s a wonderful place to learn about history, and catch an incredible show if you have time.
